This month at Sharon, we continue the Bicentennial celebration with a "Remembering the Past" service. The idea is to honor the cloud of witnesses that has come before us, and to acknowledge the steadfast love of the Lord that has sustained this group of believers in Moon Township for 200 years. However, it would be wrong to rest on our laurels- to be glad of what has passed without any thoughts of the present or future. God's presence endures. He still sustains this group of believers- right now.
Looking at the present, we can gratefully see His hand at work in the many ministries here; we can feel His loving hold on the happy remnant that remains after a few difficult years. We can experience His peace in our leadership, finances, and enthusiastic volunteer base; and we can know His care through the supportive prayers, words, and presence of our church family.
But what about the future? Some would say, "Trust God and don't worry about it." Definitely don't worry! But thinking about it is a wonderful thing: how can we prepare for our own future here, for the next generation of believers, for the next 200 years? The answer, we believe, is in the scripture above. God Himself puts a song in our mouths- He gives each of us a joy, a passion, that makes our very hearts sing. Why is that important for the future? Because these passions ARE our calling. God is good. He doesn't call us to drudgery in His Name! He gives us joy that we can take to others in His Name. In sharing our God-given gifts, we are a living, constant, vibrant presence of God's love in the world.
So what makes your heart sing? Do you love to sew? Make a warm blanket for a sick friend. Do you love to fish? Take someone with you for peaceful fellowship in God's creation. (Mark and Treva hope your passion is singing...) The possibilities are endless, highly individual, and effective, no matter what age, salary, health status, or any other limitations we perceive of ourselves. God can use your personal joy- a gift from Him in the first place- to bless others and draw them into His Kingdom, thereby sustaining communities like Sharon for centuries to come.
So go, listen to that song in your heart, and sing a song of praise to our God.
SDG, Mark and Treva
We invite anyone who would like to sing during the summer months to join our "pick up choirs." No rehearsals, commitments, or experience necessary. Just show up at 9:30 on these days, and sing along!
June 4 - Spirit Song
June 11 - Amazing Grace
July 16 - TBD
August 20 - A New Hymn Commissioned for the SCPC Bicentennial Celebration
Moving into the future, the Congregation can look forward to hearing:
The Chancel Choir, who will return for the Pentecost Service on June 4
Various solos and small groups over the Summer months
The Ringers of Sharon (Alumni group) on July 2, conducted by Dr. Bill Payn
Also, Mark and Treva invite anyone who would like to sing an old-time choir piece for the Old-Time Service on June 11, and a brand-new piece written exclusively to celebrate the Bicentennial, to be performed at the Bicentennial Celebration Service on August 20.
WELL DONE! The Pocket Change collection totaled $1,703.80!!!! The children did a wonderful job collecting the change and the congregation was very generous!!!! More children in Haiti will now have safe drinking water and will be less likely to die from cholera.
We have just had one of our own, The Reverend Ron Schermerhorn, complete his course work at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and pass his exams for ordination as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. You helped Ron achieve this goal by your generous contributions to the Reuel E. Johnson Scholarship Fund. This fund is used to assist Sharon members or staff in their seminary studies. CONGRATULATIONS, Ron! The offering for the Reuel E. Johnson Scholarship Fund will be collected on Sunday, July 2, 2017. This is a fitting day for this offering because it is the day that we will have the Ringers of Sharon Reunion. Rev. Johnson was the catalyst for Sharon Church’s developing a hand bell choir.
Are you ready?! Are you excited?! It’s almost here!!!! THE 200th BIRTHDAY OF SHARON COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH!!!!!!! The big celebration will occur on Sunday, August 20th.
During the month of August, we will all have the opportunity to give a onetime birthday present to the church. $200 for 200!!!!!
DREAM THE FUTURE!!!! If every member gave a gift of $200, we would collect almost $50,000! If every giving unit(family), gave $200, we would raise about $36,000! IMAGINE WHAT GOD COULD DO WITH THAT!!!!
$200 would be a gift of $1 for each year that Sharon has been in existence. Some may wish to give other factors of 2 - $2 for every year that you have lived, $2 for every year that you have belonged to Sharon church, $20 for every milestone [baptism, wedding etc] celebrated in this church or whatever gift that you feel is appropriate in celebration of this Bicentennial year.
The proceeds from these gifts will be given 20% to mission and 80% to capital improvements to our aging plant. God has been faithful to Sharon Church through the years and in gratitude for His grace and love our birthday gifts will continue His mission through this congregation!
Another blessing, we are pleased to announce that Stacy Ford has joined our committee and we really appreciate her involvement!!!
The PNC is getting very close to finding our next pastor. We feel that God has been leading us in this process by opening some doors and closing others. After having some questions answered by our Presbytery representatives, we met with the Personnel and Finance Committees to determine parameters for our Terms for Call. We would like to thank the congregation for all the prayers and patience, and hope to have good news to share with everyone very soon.
The Young Couples group is taking a “Summer Break.” This past year they studied a variety of topics, the last two classes focused on the Gospel of John and “Living Water”. They will resume meeting in the Fall at 11:15am in Room 100. Any young couples are invited to join and if you would like to lead a discussion (or even a series) that would be wonderful! It is a great group and thanks to you, Sharon Church has an awesome future!
